the wonder of remembering

This is week two in our series on what Scripture teaches us about the value of wonder in our lives and ministries.

Today’s Scripture passage is Psalm 77:11-15 (NASB)
“I shall remember the deeds of the Lord;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
I will meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
Your way, O God, is holy;
What god is great like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
You have made known Your strength among the peoples.
You have by Your power redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.”

“You are the God who works wonders.”
Do you really believe that? What are some of the wonders you have seen God do?

I hope that some things immediately came to mind. If not, I would sincerely recommend taking some time to reflect on that further. Life is tough and the psalmist understood that remembering these wonders from God can help us in those tough times. In fact, in the New American Standard Bible the heading at the top of Psalm 77 says, “Comfort in Trouble from Recalling God’s Mighty Deeds.”

Why is this so important? In life and in ministry, tough times will happen. In fact Jesus Himself promised us that in John 16:33: “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Like the psalmist describes in these verses from Psalm 77, remembering the wonders we’ve seen and even the ones recounted for us in Scripture and then meditating and musing on focusing and dwelling on them help us through these tough times. It helps us remember how great and powerful God truly is. Remembering that and focusing on Him helps us to put our current difficulties in better perspective. Our problems don’t disappear, but we remember that we aren’t alone. The God who works wonders is with us.

So are you struggling with things in your life? Are you dealing with struggles and difficulties in your ministry? Take time to remember the wonders that God has done. Take time to remember the God who works wonders. Remember that He is Holy. Remember that He is great. Remember that He is strong and powerful. Remember that He redeems.
